This technology, a single button placed on a website, allows the user to sign up to the website with their Facebook login, thus giving the website access to the users Facebook information and in turn giving Facebook access to the users activities on the website.
A great example of this is Discovery Channels ‘Frenzied Waters’ campaign. The website is an interactive flash movie which, once the user has signed up via Facebook, can pull users pics and information to create a montage about the death of the user by a shark attack.
This technology has been used before but never to the same degree or with the same impact primarily because Facebook’s massive audience. A website suddenly becomes available to 200 million people. Facebook also has the benefits of tracking its user browsing behaviours. And finally the user has a rich media experience they are able to share with their friends.
